Winter Fungus

Despite the hard frosts we have recently some fungi can survive the below freezing temperatures. One such fungus is Xylaria hypoxylon (Candlesnuff fungus) found today on rotting wood in a hedgerow near Meinciau. The white upper section of the fungus is where the asexual spores are produced and the lower black region where the sexual spores are formed.
