Earthstar in Penybedd Wood.

These two were growing very close together in Penybedd Wood. Do you think the one on the right could be a Sessile earthstar, Geastrum fimbriatum, or just another Collared earthstar that has lost its collar somehow?

  1. Nice Colin ---- I have looked for these but not yet seen any this year --but Stephanie has! I think both are G.triplex as both same size. One has not lost the collar but it has not formed -- Kew book says 'collar usually present' so not always there. G.lageniforme =Flask-shaped Earthstar is similar to triplex but much smaller and the collar does to form but the rays split as if a collar will form. Stephanie has had this this year and I have had it from Country Park in past years.
