Sneaking in an ID request from across the border

Found this on a cut branch of hawthorn at The Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran but though the the Carmarthenshire fungi expertise could help me out! Thanks folks.

  1. Isabel --- now know what it is on but no help to me. Fewer folk take an interest in crusts and brackets on wood. I have put this as a post on the carms facebook page as this gets more active 'help' it seems. All still a mystery to me. Still think it is one of the Phellinus or Fomitiporia sp.

  2. One suggestion on Facebook is Phellinus pomaceus although colour is not quite 'right'. If it is this, I have not seen P.pomaceus quite like this. Microscopy is only solution!

  3. Sometimes it is hard to love these obscure little resupinate fungi.
